About the role
The Art Program is a patient-led, art in health service which uses the visual arts – in all its forms – to help improve the lives of patients, families, carers and staff across Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN). Working in partnership with the health and the arts sectors, the program provides accessible and meaningful opportunities for artistic expression that aid patient’s physical, mental, and emotional recovery.
The Art Program Lead must work onsite at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick at least one day per week. The role involves leading a team of two Artist Educators, and managing resources to ensure high-performance delivery across three key areas: Exhibition Program, Arts Learning Program, and the Permanent Collection at Randwick Children’s Hospital.
Key responsibilities include curation, artist management, exhibition development and delivery across SCHN. The Art Program Lead will collaborate with SCHF, hospital departments, and key stakeholders to identify the Hospital’s creative needs, align hospital needs with supporter capacity, develop new initiatives, and enhance existing services. Additionally, the role aligns the Art Program with SCHF’s strategic focus, including supporting creative opportunities that enhance fundraising and philanthropy.
Job Responsibilities:
Exhibition Program
Curate, manage, install, and document four seasonal rotations of exhibitions at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick and in partnership with the Art Curator at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Handle sales inquiries, artist payments, and maintain positive relationships with artists.
Lead concept development and logistics for exhibitions.
Collection Management
Enhance and diversify the Art collection; advise on new acquisitions and oversee the Cultural Gifts Program.
Manage the storage, security, insurance, and conservation of the Art collection.
Ensure accessibility and engagement with the collection through effective curation and installation within the
Hospitals Arts Learning Program
Oversee and support the delivery of bedside and group workshops facilitated by Artist Educators.
Integrate broader programming activities into the Arts Learning Program with Artist Educators.
Projects
Develop and manage short, mid, and long-term projects to engage children and young people, and offer direct experiences with Artists. Explore new partnerships and collaborations to position the Art Program as a leader in Arts in Health.
General
Communicate results and priorities through regular meetings and reports.
Manage budgets, quotes, invoices, and improve business processes.
Grow and manage partnerships, represent SCHF externally, and promote programs through communication and marketing campaigns.
Document interactions with patients for media and funding purposes
Key Relationships
Donor and Patient Engagement: Collaborate to achieve team goals.
Internal Fundraising Teams: Advise on creative opportunities and Art Program services.
Brand, Marketing, and Communications Team (BMC): Promote programs through communication and marketing campaigns.
Artists: Manage relationships, including the exhibition application process and artist network.
SCHN Staff: Coordinate access and approvals, develop opportunities for patient cohorts.
External Stakeholders: Build and maintain robust peer networks to grow the Art Program.
Qualifications and Experience:
Qualifications in Fine Arts, Art History or a related field and/or relevant experience in a cultural position in a gallery or museum.
Up to five years’ experience working in the delivery of creative program with children and young adults of diverse abilities.
Skills & Competencies:
Demonstrated understanding of professional standards in museum/art gallery practice and procedures and commercial gallery practice
Experience managing permanent and temporary exhibitions
Expertise in building relationships with key stakeholders at all levels
Experience in identifying funding sources and grant submission writing
Exceptional project management skills
Well-developed digital literacy
Strong organisational and time management skills
Well-developed communication skills, both oral and written
Well established networks and professional relationships across arts, health and research disciplines is desirable.
